siemens-mpi.ko is a module that allows to use the USB to MPI adapter 6ES7-972-0CB20-0AX0
from Siemens under Linux. It was written for kernel 2.6 and tested under 2.6.13.


Using this module:
- The module depends on module usbserial, so make sure it is loaded.
- As root, do 'insmod <path to module>siemens-mpi.ko'

In your syslog, some messages like these should show up:

The module is now now attached to ttyUSB0. It may be another number if you have already serial
USB devices attached.

You can test it with testMPI -3 /dev/ttyUSB0.

You MUST use the option -3. This selects a protocol version for the communication between
PC and adapter that was not supported by libnodave before. But it is the only "language" the
USB to MPI adapter seems to understand...

Compiling this module:

I do not provide a Makefile for this module because I cannot write it myself. I'm not a kernel 
guru and did not even understand hat this new .ko format is nor how to create it. Here is how
I compiled it:
After compiling kernel and modules I copied the code into directory:
/usr/src/linux/drivers/usb/serial

In this direcory there is a Makefile. I modified it this way: In the Makefile, there is a list
of al the modules to be made. I added it to the end of tat list:

obj-$(CONFIG_USB_SERIAL)			+= siemens_mpi.o

As the modules all depend on some configuration settings, i made it depend on CONFIG_USB_SERIAL
which must be defined if you use any serial USB devices.

Then I typed 'make modules' again. This builds only this module, as all others are already ready.

I added a patch for kernel 2.6.13 (and up?). Thanks to Christian Daschill. I did not try it 
myself. Good look.
